Group Therapy for Adult ADHD by Bmindful Psychotherapists in Ottawa
We are a group of highly trained independent professionals in Ottawa, who also work(ed) at Carleton University, Algonquin College and at CHEO. If you have been diagnosed with ADHD and/or are experiencing inattention, impulsivity, hyperactivity, anxiety, depression, or difficulties with time and project management, and chronic lack of success, know that group therapy can help teach compensatory strategies to maximize your chance of a successful life.
Individual vs. Group Therapy
It can be difficult to determine which form of therapy, either individual or group, is the best option for you. If you are struggling with this decision, consider the following statements:
- I prefer one-on-one conversations
- I would like to discuss my childhood experiences
- I would like to receive therapy while simultaneously developing intra-personal skills
- I have specific questions that I would like to ask a registered counsellor/psychotherapist
- I want to learn ways of managing ADHD symptoms from a registered counsellor/psychotherapist
- I feel comfortable talking in front of small groups
- I would like to discuss my current struggles
- I would like to receive therapy while simultaneously developing interpersonal skiils
- I would benefit from listening to other people’s questions and experiences
- I want to learn ways of managing symptoms from other people with ADHD
(Sakis & Tuckman, 2015)
Both forms of therapy are successful in addressing and managing the symptomatic behaviours of ADHD. However, if you predominately agreed with statements in the right column you may want to consider group therapy.
Group Therapy Protocol
Group therapy aims to improve one’s well-being and emotional state through Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) conventions. ACT is a form a treatment that focuses on acknowledging difficult experiences and recounting struggles with more psychological flexibility and acceptance. ACT-based group therapy will consist of mindfulness-based exercises that work on using goal setting, diffusing self-critical thoughts and establishing acceptance. This protocol is an extremely effective form of treatment for individuals that have been diagnosed with ADHD and/or are experiencing ADHD related symptoms. Various themes will be discussed in group therapy: dealing with impulsivity, developing strategies for time management, learning to promote adequate sleep, etc. Hence, group therapy sessions will predominately focus on the management and normalization of ADHD symptoms.
Benefits of Group Therapy
- Normalizes ADHD by emphasizing the fact that you are not alone
- Learn effective tips and tricks that have worked for other individuals with ADHD
- Share/acquire helpful resources
- Promotes social skills, like maintaining a conversation and listening attentively
- Provides an opportunity to relate to others, which benefits psychological well-being
We encourage all youths and adults who have been diagnosed with ADHD and/or are experiencing inattention, impulsivity, hyperactivity, anxiety, depression, or difficulties with time and project management to pursue therapy. At Bmindful we provide both individual and group-based therapies. Book an appointment with one of our registered psychotherapists to determine if group therapy is the right approach for you.
