We are a group of independent psychotherapists, counsellors and coaches in Ottawa, who also work(ed) at Carleton University, Algonquin College and CHEO providing support to young adults with disabilities.We specialize in providing supports for adults with learning disabilities (LD). Our therapeutic success is the result of combining counselling interventions with coaching, learning strategies, and mindfulness training to meet the individual needs of our clients. Information about Learning Disabilities
A learning disability affects a specific psychological process involved in learning. A person diagnosed with a learning disability will present with unexpected academic underachievement and with one or more academic impairments in the areas of reading, math, written expression and oral language. The most common academic weakness is in reading.
Academic Difficulties
Persons with learning disabilities may present with the following difficulties:
- Reading fluency, decoding new words, reading comprehension, word recognition
- Problem-solving, math fluency and basic calculations
- Written expression (e.g. organization and flow of ideas), spelling, writing speed
- Expressive and receptive communication
- Executive functioning (e.g. time management, organization)
