Autism Spectrum Disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder and the onset of symptoms occur in childhood. The disorder is commonly known as Asperger’s Syndrome or High Functioning Autism. Symptoms are characterized by levels of severity in the following categories: repetitive behaviours, restrictive activities, intense interests in one or many areas and social/communication impairments.
ASD Symptoms in Adults
Adults often demonstrate strengths in memorization of facts, attention to detail, and approach problems in a systematic and methodical manner. They can present with a number of symptoms which vary in severity. These symptoms can include:
- Difficulty initiating and maintaining social interactions
- Executive functioning impairments (planning, organizing, managing time, problem solving)
- Mental health (excessive worry, anxiety, depression)
- Struggles with understanding social conventions and unwritten rules
- Inability to sustain focus and attention
- Applying skills and rules to various situations
- Interpret verbal and written communication literally
- Struggles with small talk, initiating and maintaining conversations
- Restrictive routines and activities
- Difficulties managing multiple demands
ASD Treatment
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), skills-based interventions and behavioural strategies can be effective therapeutic approaches for adults with ASD. Specific interventions may include: psychoeducation, communication and assertiveness, problem solving strategies, planning and managing tasks and goals, strategies to approach unfamiliar situations, coping skills for anxiety, and social skills development.
