Mindfulness for Adults with ADHD in Ottawa
We are a group of highly trained independent psychotherapists, counsellors and coaches in Ottawa, who hold multiple certifications in providing mindfulness based interventions. We incorporate mindfulness practices in interventions used for ADHD, anxiety, depression, ASD, burnout, academic and parenting stress, life dissatisfaction, or menopausal symptoms management.
Mindfulness & ADHD
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder, which impacts executive function. Executive function deficits include issues with time management, planning, and problem solving. Mindfulness-based interventions have been found to be extremely effective in improving executive function skills. Hence, the practice of mindfulness should be considered for children and adults with ADHD.
Benefits of Mindfulness on ADHD
Mindfulness is an extremely powerful tool for ADHD management. In fact, studies have shown that a mindful approach to ADHD can be just as effective as medication. Through mindfulness-based interventions, you will develop your ability to:
- Regulate and sustain attention
- Maintain organization
- Process information effectively
- Develop plans and manage time
- Problem solve in a variety of situations
- Inhibit impulsivity
- Engage in social interactions
- Regulate emotions
- Manage stress and anxiety
There are many ways to successfully manage ADHD symptoms. At Bmindful we incorporate mindfulness principles and practices into our therapeutic interventions. Mindfulness Therapies
Numerous therapies incorporate a mindfulness-based approach. Kabat-Zinn’s (1990) eight-week program, called Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), taught participants the practice of mindfulness. He found that MBSR significantly improved participants psychological and physical well-being. Due to the success of MBSR, mindfulness has been integrated into Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), where treatment focuses on altering a person’s relationship with cognitive events. Additionally, 3rd Wave Therapies like Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) also incorporate the practice of mindfulness.
At Bmindful we regularly offer the Mindfulness Based Cognitive therapy (MBCT) and provide individual and group based 3rd Wave Cognitive Behavioural Therapies. For more information please visit our treatment options section or book an appointment.
Zsuzsanna Grandpierre, M.A.Ed, RP, CCC, conducted research with Dr. Diana Koszycki on the benefits of a six-week mindfulness program. This research indicated that the completion of the program was significantly correlated with improved executive and academic functioning as well as reduced symptoms of ADHD.
