Adult ADHD Assessment
ADHD is usually diagnosed in early childhood, but it is not uncommon to receive a diagnosis during adolescence or even in adulthood. Medical doctors, psychologists and psychiatrists can communicate a diagnosis and assessment can happen multiple ways:
- A psycho-educational assessment investigates the possible presence of a learning disability, ADHD and mental health symptoms. Standardized tests are used to measure cognitive abilities and academic achievement. Questionnaires are administered to assess attention issues and mental health symptoms.
- A specific psychological assessment consists of clinical interviews, standardized psychological testing, documentation review (e.g. school report cards) and questionnaires.
- Consultation with a medical doctor who is experienced with diagnosing adult ADHD or getting a referral to a psychiatrist.
- An ADHD screening assessment in combination with a consultation with a medical doctor. The screening assessment includes a clinical interview, questionnaires and documentation review.*
***We offer ADHD screening assessments as per the CAADRA’s – Canadian ADHD Practice Guidelines and collaborate with medical doctors to investigate the presence of a possible adult ADHD diagnosis. The screening assessment includes the following component:
- Clinical interview
- Completion of questionnaires and documentation review
- Review of screening results
- Brief report summarizing results and recommendations signed by a registered psychotherapist and registered psychologist.
If clients meet the diagnostic criteria of an Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) after consulting a medical doctor, clients are encouraged to schedule a follow up consultation with one of our registered psychotherapists to discuss in detail strategies and recommendations which may include the following:
- Impact of ADHD symptoms on life domains (e.g. career, marriage/couples’ relationship, parenting, personal life)
- Strategies for executive functioning skills, emotional regulation, attention and anxiety
- Lifestyle changes
- Mindfulness training
- Assistive technologies
- Medication management
- Parenting
- Workplace accommodations and strategies
- Psychoeducation for couples
