ACT on ADHD, Level 1
Date: October 3rd to December 10th, 2017
Time:Tuesdays, 18:30 – 20:30
This unique 10 sessions Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) based ADHD management program was developed for adults (18 and over) with attention and executive functioning related challenges to help them change the way they relate to themselves. We believe that this change is the missing link to their success.
If you are reading this page, it means you or somebody who is close to you is experiencing challenges with time management, organization, task initiation and completion, forgetfulness, impulsivity or has difficulty with regulating emotions. Attention and executive functioning related difficulties affect between 5 to 12% of the adult population, which means that you are not alone. However, living with these challenges is difficult and recurring lack of success to accomplish desired goals can give rise to hopelessness and harsh self-criticism. We often find that once these emotional and mental states are present, it initiates a circular pattern with self-defeating behaviours. Accordingly, our program first focuses on breaking this feedback loop through acceptance and commitment therapeutic interventions before moving onto skills (time management, organization, decision making, etc) based training.
In this program, you will learn a different way to relate to and engage with yourself. First, you will gain an in-depth knowledge of what is ADHD and how it manifests for you which we hope will facilitate your full hearted acceptance of yourself. Then, we will investigate the “workability” of your current coping strategies and how you engage with yourself. Next, we will focus on developing a new tool kit. You will be:
- Introduced to mindfulness skills to help you recognize self-defeating patterns
- Taught strategies to defuse from self-critical thoughts
- Learn to engage with yourself in a kind and encouraging way
- Identify how you want to treat yourself and others
- Begin cultivating value-driven committed action
Finally, you will be introduced to a variety of executive functioning (EF) strategies to address time and task management, working memory deficits, attention and motivation issues. Once you complete this program, you will be eligible to participate in our level 2 ACT on ADHD program, which will help you fine tune your new EF support skills.
The program includes: psycho-education, individual work, group discussions, experiential exercises, homework assignments and humor. You do not need to have a formal diagnosis of ADHD to participate.
